Messages to E.T.
There have been a few attempts to actively communicate with extra-terrestrials.
These have been mainly through the tranmission, via a radio telescope,
of streams of radio "pulses" in which each pulse is meant to represent a "bit" (a one or a zero);
an actual pulse representing a "1" and a period of silence (or lack of a pulse) indicating a "0".
In this manner, information can be encoded in the most simple and universal binary language,
with the hope that an intelligence that observes such a transmission will be able to decode and understand the message.
Various types of information have been encoded in this manner and trasmitted in the direction of various Sun-like stars
or star clusters that may potentially nuture life-forms similar to our own.
